Cockroaches contain one of the major indoor allergens, inducing respiratory allergies. Cockroaches can be found in large numbers worldwide which makes cockroaches a cosmopolitan. Worldwide there are about 3500 different cockroach species. The five cockroaches which are known to induce respiratory allergies include Blattella germanica, Blatta orientalis, Periplaneta americana, Supella longipalpis and Periplaneta fuliginosa. Sensitisation to these species in asthma patients varies between 30-60% worldwide. Blattella germanica is a common specie all over the world, therefore, B. germanica is often found in sensitisation profiles of patients with respiratory allergy.
