Description
Soy allergy is a form of food allergy characterized by an immune system overreaction to compounds found in soy (Glycine max). This hypersensitivity can lead to physical symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort, respiratory issues, or skin reactions. Soy is one of the eight most common allergens affecting both children and adults, with a prevalence of approximately 0.3% in the general population.
Acute soy allergy can manifest quickly, within seconds to an hour, or develop more slowly over several hours to days, depending on the exposure conditions. Long-term soy allergy often starts in infancy, particularly in response to soy-based infant formula. While many children outgrow this allergy, it can persist into adulthood for some.
IgE-mediated soy allergy symptoms may include rash, hives, itching of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, eyes, or skin, swelling of the lips, tongue, eyelids, or face, difficulty swallowing, runny or congested nose, hoarseness, wheezing, shortness of breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lightheadedness, fainting, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms vary from person to person and can differ with each incident. Allergic reactions become particularly dangerous when they affect the respiratory tract or blood circulation. Respiratory distress may be indicated by wheezing, airway blockage, and cyanosis, while circulatory issues may present as a weak pulse, pale skin, and fainting. When such severe symptoms occur, the reaction is classified as anaphylaxis.
